Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.
Video review systems will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Athletes will gain the right to contest specific decisions made by the chair umpire, mirroring the practice currently in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.
The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This step follows just a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to review other situations, including:
- If a ball has bounced twice.
- If a ball touched an rival's racket or person during play.
- Possible interference end of a point.
Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.
A Recent Example
A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.
The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.
Growing Trend
This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its events.
Further Updates
Another change at The Championships this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.
In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
